UK: London Bridge Hotel Wins Planning Approval for Major Expansion
The London Bridge Hotel, an independent landmark near Borough Market, is set for a major transformation.
The 144-room property will expand to nearly 200 keys under a newly approved scheme by Resident — the architecture practice known for integrating contemporary design with sensitive heritage work.
The scheme, recently approved, proposes a sensitive yet ambitious extension of the current 144-room offering, taking the hotel towards a 200-key provider.
Three Buildings, One Vision
The hotel comprises three distinct structures — a Dutch-gabled building, a former telecoms block, and the original hotel. Resident’s design unifies them through improved internal circulation and a refined new façade.
In collaboration with heritage specialists Cogent Heritage and a forward-thinking project team, the scheme navigates complex conservation territory.
The London Bridge Hotel project stands as a blueprint for how to grow within constraint — retaining embodied carbon, repurposing structure, and phasing work to allow the Hotel to remain open through the works.
“This project is about more than growth — it’s about honouring the area’s architectural history while creating a contemporary guest experience,” said James Smith, Senior Associate at Resident.
The redesigned hotel aims to set a new benchmark for heritage-led hospitality in central London.
