Yvonne Engelmann at Ambiente 2027: “International connections don’t happen by chance”
As the global interiors and furniture industry navigates a changing market, Ambiente is putting international connections, curated matchmaking and contract business firmly at the heart of its next chapter.
We speak to Yvonne Engelmann, Director of Ambiente Living & Giving, about why the future of trade fairs is as much about who you meet as what you see.
The business of interiors is changing. Brands are looking beyond familiar markets, seeking new audiences and increasingly international opportunities, while architects, designers, hospitality groups and buyers are looking for distinctive products and the right people to bring projects to life. Against this backdrop, Frankfurt’s Ambiente is expanding its offer for the interior design and contract sectors. At the centre of that strategy is Interior Looks, the curated area for premium interior and furniture design, which is being developed into a more international matchmaking platform for contract business. For Yvonne Engelmann, Director of Ambiente Living & Giving, the ambition is straightforward: to make it easier for the right people to find one another.
Building a global meeting place
“Companies are looking for new international business opportunities and reliable networks,” Engelmann says. “That is why we are continuously expanding our offering for international contract business and bringing these activities together under Ambiente Projects. ”The initiative encompasses dedicated programmes for architecture and interior design, alongside formats designed to encourage personal exchange and targeted networking. The intention is to create stronger links between manufacturers, retailers, hospitality businesses, architects and interior designers, and to strengthen Ambiente’s position as an international meeting place for the sector. It is a timely move. As the interiors industry becomes increasingly global, the value of a trade fair is no longer simply about showcasing the latest collections. It is also about facilitating conversations that might otherwise take months, or even years, to happen.“ International connections don’t happen by chance,” Engelmann says. “In challenging times, personal encounters and targeted networking are becoming more important than ever.”
From inspiration to opportunity
That philosophy is shaping Ambiente’s investment in formats that bring manufacturers and key decision makers together. Among them is the Interior Design & Architecture Hub, alongside partnerships with international organisations including World Architects and the European Council of Interior Architects, ECIA. The aim is to combine inspiration and knowledge with something more tangible: commercial opportunity. The industry response suggests there is appetite for the approach. Bielefelder Werkstätten, Ethnicraft and Studio Höllental have already confirmed their participation, while German furniture brand Bretz is set to exhibit at Ambiente for the first time. More details are expected to be announced at the fair’s press conference in early September, including the identity of the Ambiente Designer 2027.
The value of the right introduction
Matchmaking has become something of a buzzword across the global trade fair landscape, but Engelmann sees it as a practical response to the pressures facing businesses. Ambiente’s advantage, she argues, is the international breadth of both its exhibitors and visitors. Frankfurt attracts a wide range of decision makers, from architecture and planning practices to hotel groups, hospitality companies, furniture and home furnishing retailers and international trading businesses. Names such as HPP Architekten, Ippolito Fleitz Group, Marriott International, Hilton, Wayfair and Harrods Group illustrate the breadth of the audience. For exhibitors, that diversity can be just as valuable as footfall. A carefully targeted introduction to an architect specifying a hotel project, a hospitality group seeking new suppliers or an international retailer exploring a new category can have far greater commercial significance than a conventional trade fair encounter. That, ultimately, is the thinking behind Ambiente’s evolving approach: less emphasis on simply being seen, and more on making the right connections.
Upcoming dates
Ambiente, Christmasworld and Creativeworld return to the Frankfurt exhibition grounds in January 2027. The programme begins with the Compass Talks on 28 January, followed by the main trade fair dates.
Ambiente/Christmasworld: 29 January to 2 February 2027
Creativeworld: 29 January to 1 February 2027
For the international interiors industry, the message is clear. In a market where brands are searching for growth and projects increasingly cross borders, the most valuable thing a trade fair can offer may not be another trend, product or collection, but the opportunity to meet the person who can take an idea somewhere new.
